Rolando (Roli) Mancera

Roli is from Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico but has lived in the US for the past 7 years. From a young age Roli has had the proclivity to paint. His current medium is oil on canvas. Inspired by nature and performed innately, his present works are considered realism. He recently has had two exhibitions of his works in Grand Rapids.
Erick Pichardo
Throughout the ancient cultures of the Americas, a magical connection existed between man and nature. This connection is evident in native peoples' incredibly skilled manipulation of materials extracted from the earth, with which they developed works of art of an extraordinary aesthetic value. They created a culture that expressed the point of view of their own communities while at the same time opening up communication between people and nature, making connections between the particular and the universal. They created a new world of "unreality" within the real world, a world of magic. The concept of "magic" permits the transformation of the idea of nature. This does not go against the laws of nature, but is rather an integral part of them. Magic is the natural act made evident through artistic creation and our experience of art.
Using rich colors and textures in mixed media, Erick Pichardo creates visual poems that inhabit a dream environment. With symbols and figures out of their natural context, he creates a story of the imagination, told in the language of magical realism that provokes a feeling or delivers a message. He is one of many artists attempting to recreate this ancient, natural magic for the 21st Century.
Hugo Claudín

Hugo Claudín is a Mexican-American painter of contemporary figuration. He was born in Guadalajara Mexico in 1966. As a teenager he migrated to the United States where he studied art at Kendall College of Art & Design. In addition to being a painter, he is a drummer/percussionist and co-founder of the latin band Cabildo. He collaborates extensively with local artists and musicans. Included are works from this current series of paintings titled Mexicains Sans Frontieres which is also the name of his studio at 120 South Division or Avenue of the Arts. Mexicains Sans Frontieres (Mexicanos sin Fronteras or Mexicans without Borders) "deals with my binational status and the secret lives of undocumented immigrants from Mexico. and the difficulty
of crossing borders, -cultural and geo-political, as well as language barriers. Hugo uses the Mexican wrestler mask as a metaphor for the unseen communities of undocumented people living in the US that go uncounted and misrepresnted in the media. He gives them a dignity and cultural richness that is often overlooked. He uses bright colors he experienced on sabbatical in the artist community of Todos Santos in Baja California Sur that he visited in 2004.
Oswaldo Garcés

An artist in every respect, Oswaldo Garces’ talent was shaped from an early age in his home country of Ecuador. Born in 1961 to a family of fine artists, photographers, and authors, he was exposed to a world of adults who encouraged him to indulge in magical expression.
Sitting quietly in the back of the classroom while his mother studied art, at the Central University of Ecuador; Garces was exposed to the works of Guayasamin, Van Gogh, Vitery, Picasso, Monet and Dali. He clearly remembers the wonder he felt as he sat as his mother’s side resisting his desire to hold brush and pallet, while she transformed a stark government building with the vibrant color of an immense mural. Fortunately, as a boy Garces’ ability to draw and paint was recognized, nurtured and flourishes today in the form of portraits, landscapes, nudes and abstract pieces. His latest works reflect the persecution of immigrant and undocumented workers, as he examines current social issues impacting the Latino community.
Garces lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan where he owns a successful janitorial company. He co-founded the Hispanic newspaper, El Vocero Hispano and recently formed El Heraldo Enterprises; a Latin Internet Media Company.
Talena & Lorena Gloden
Talena resides in Ibague, Colombia (West Central Colombia). She has been painting professionally for over twenty years. Most of her work is in watercolors; preferred because of the brilliant colors.
Looking for a more accessible media, Talena and fellow Colombian, women’s fashion accessory designer, Lorena Gloden worked to develop these wonderful, useful, yet artistic wood-serving trays. The designs are striking, incorporating the flora and fauna of the region with the vibrant colors associated with much of the Latin American art. They are intended to be functional – do not be afraid to use them – and can be displayed for their beauty when not in use.
Each of these pieces is hand painted and covered with a resin to help protect it from heat and moisture.
