Guitarist Alexander Dunn has been described as “emotional depth and flourish” (Los Angeles Times), “exceptional grace and musicality” (Soundboard Magazine), and “sheer virtuosity” (Victoria Monday Magazine). He has performed across the US, Canada, in Europe, Japan, and New Zealand. Performances at major music festivals include Aspen, Vancouver New Music, Darmstadt, Northwest Festival, Guitar Foundation of America International Conference, International Guitar and Lute Institute, as well as appearing with artists Pepe Romero, Jan de Gaetanii, Monica Huggett, Benjamin Butterfield, and others. He is heard regularly on CBC Stereo from early to new music.
Mr. Dunn holds a Masters degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and a PhD in musicology from the University of California, San Diego. He has taken prizes at the Toronto International Competition and the Freiburg Internationaler Wettbewerg as well as grants from the Canada Council, the San Diego Foundation, and the International Institute of Education. He has appeared extensively with Los Romeros and performs in duo with Pepe Romero. Mr. Dunn was the co-director of the 1997 Guitar Foundation of America International Conference and is a judge for its international competition; he is also co-director of the International Guitar and Lute Institute through the California State University.
He has performed recently with the New England Philharmonic, the Vancouver Symphony, and in numerous chamber music concerts and early music groups in BC and the Northwest. Engagaments this and next season include a tour of New Zealand and Australia, a feature recital at the Taiwan International Guitar Festival, and recitals in Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, Toronto, and Germany. Mr. Dunn is president of the Victoria Guitar Society and heads the guitar programs at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and the University of Victoria.
