Growing up oldest of 4 brothers and having a musical family has always been a big influence on his life. Watching his grandfather play accordion and his grandmother play guitar when he was young made him realize that he was meant to be a musician. He loved the music and the heritage that came with the music so at the very young and impressionable age of 12 he was already playing violin and guitar which then lead him to play with a youth Mariachi group in the hometown of Alice Texas.
In 1987 he moved to Michigan where it is rare to see a Mariachi Musician anywhere. Performing in a number of Church festivals in the west Michigan area. He also has performed in several 5 De Mayo Festivals in Holland, Grand Rapids, Kalazamoo and Muskegon, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin to name a few. In the 1980s, while working at Westwood Middle School, Josie Guillen often helped students with their homework after school and, when they were finished, she taught them Mexican folkloric dance. This marked the beginning of Grupo Tarasco, the resident dance company of the Cook Arts Center.
In establishing this dance company, Josie’s goals were to convey the importance of an education to young Latinas and Latinos, while keeping them off the streets and instilling in them a spirit of confidence and self esteem. Participation was and continues to be contingent on a youngster staying in school, doing the best they can in their studies, and staying out of trouble. Josie also wanted to do something that would help students maintain their Mexican cultural ties. About half of the members of the current troupe are of Mexican descent.
Grupo Tarasco gives more than fifty performances a year throughout West Michigan and can be the featured entertainment at your next gathering or event. Find out more by calling (616) 742-0692.

Get ready for some Tejano music meets Latin Rock showdown, it what one listener had to say after Mike Medina & the South Side Evolucion concert. Of course they play a variety of traditional Mexican music that range from silky smooth Tejano, body shaking Cumbia’s to heart melting Boreros. But it is their musical delivery, which is full of emotion, strength and perseverance that excites and entertains crowds whenever they perform, thrilling audiences with soulful vocals, a driving rhythm section and jaw- dropping keyboard licks.
Although their band line up is impressive, it’s that “South Side” magic, maturity and professionalism that make them one of the more exciting and entertaining bands to hit Mid-west in a long time.
“With music, our goal is not to be famous, but to stay true to our Tajano roots, we feel we have been blessed with certain musical abilities and it is an honor to share the richness of our culture with both new and old audiences. We are deeply moved to see people dancing and being entertained with our music.”
Evolucion has maintained a standard of excellence over the past 10 years.
