Rusmel's interest in art began when he was a young child, influenced by his maternal grandfather who was a painter. His grandfather taught him how to draw and paint, but Rusmel soon realized that what really fascinated him was sculpture. At the age of twelve, Rusmel became part of the sculpture group, Jose Fowler, and is still part of this group today. Through his participation with the group, he has had the opportunity to showcase his work at numerous international exhibitions and events. After finishing his studies as an art instructor, Rusmel began working at the Casa de la Culture. On August 13, he created an online social media group for sculptors called, Gregorio Fernandez.
Rusmel's art is influenced by the African roots of Cuban culture. With the culture's rhythms, dances and history fusing together with the current social issues, he has created a form of expression and image that is truly and authentically Cuban.
